THERE are seven keys to the great gate,
\nBeing eight in one and one in eight.
\nFirst, let the body of thee be still,
\nBound by the cerements of will,
\nCorpse-rigid; thus thou mayst abort
\nThe fidget-babes that tease the thought.
\nNext, let the breath-rhythm be low,
\nEasy, regular, and slow;
\nSo that thy being be in tune
\nWith the great sea’s Pacific swoon.
\nThird, let thy life be pure and calm,
\nSwayed softly as a windless palm.
\nFourth, let the will-to-live be bound
\nTo the one love of the profound.
\nFifth, let the thought, divinely free
\nFrom sense, observe its entity.
\nWatch every thought that springs; enhance
\nHour after hour thy vigilance!
\nIntense and keen, turned inward, miss
\nNo atom of analysis!
\nSixth, on one thought securely pinned
\nStill every whisper of the wind!
\nSo like a flame straight and unstirred
\nBurn up thy being in one word!
\nNext, still that ecstasy, prolong
\nThy meditation steep and strong,
\nSlaying even God, should He distract
\nThy attention from the chosen act!
\nLast, all these things in one o’erpowered,
\nTime that the midnight blossom flowered!
\nThe oneness is. Yet even in this,
\nMy son, thou shall not do amiss
\nIf thou restrain the expression, shoot
\nThy glance to rapture’s darkling root,
\nDiscarding name, form, sight, and stress
\nEven of this high consciousness;
\nPierce to the heart! I leave thee here:
\nThou art the Master. I revere
\nThy radiance that rolls afar,
\nO Brother of the Silver Star!<\/p>\n
